Jafar Jafarov was born in Baku.

He studied at the A.Bubnov Pedagogical Institute in Moscow (1937).

He worked as the head of the literary section at the Academic National Drama Theater (1937-1938), the head of the script department at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio (1938-1939), the executive secretary of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan (1939), and the Deputy Minister of Culture. He held various responsible positions in the government. From 1959 until the end of his life, he was the head of the Theater and Cinema Department of the Institute of Architecture and Art of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

He began his critical activity in 1930. He wrote scientific articles and monographs on the works of Huseyn Arablinski, Ismayil Hidayatzadeh, Hagigat Rzayeva, Mehdi Mammadov, Tofig Kazimov, Abbasmirza Sharifzadeh, and Rza Tahmasib. He fundamentally researched the history of the Academic National Drama Theater and published several books on this topic. He wrote reviews of performances of Azerbaijani and Russian theaters. He wrote the books “Director's Art”, “Selected Works”, “Azerbaijan Drama Theater”, scientific works “Javid and Theater”, “Dramaturge of Mirza Fatali Akhundzade”, “Mirza Fatali Akhundzade and Theater”, “Dramaturge of William Shakespeare”.

He taught at universities since 1934.

Honored Artist (1972), Doctor of Art History (1961), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences (1962) Jafar Jafarov died in 1973 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
