Azhdar Ibrahimov was born in Ashgabat.

He studied at the Ashgabat Theater School (1940), the Film Directing Faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1946-1952, class of Sergey Yuktevich and Mikhail Rommun).

He played children's roles in the people's theater operating in Ashgabat (1923-1927). He worked at the Ashgabat Azerbaijan Musical Drama Theater (1937-1942), the Ashgabat film studio (1952-1954), the Baku film studio (1954-1959), in Vietnam (1959-1962), at the Mosfilm film studio (1962-1993). He actively participated in the creation of the first national film school in Vietnam, the training of national actors and directors. He opened a film school in Hanoi. The first Vietnamese feature films were shot under his direction: "On an Autumn Day" (1962), "The Greedy Bird (Skinny)" (1962), "Two Soldiers" (1962). The last two films won awards at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

He directed many episodes of the documentary "Soviet Turkmenistan".

He was the director of the diploma film "Fighter for Peace" (1952 / Russia) for foreign film producers, the director of the documentary film "Firuza" (1953 / Turkmenistan), the director of the documentary film "East of the Caspian Sea" (1953 / Turkmenistan), the actor in the film "The Red Tulips of Issyk-Kul" (1971, directed by Bolotbek Shamshiyev / Kyrgyzstan), the screenwriter of the film "It is necessary to love" (1973, directed by Muhamed Soyunkhanov / Turkmenistan), the director of the film "Heart Issues" (1973 / Russia), the director and screenwriter of the film "My Love, My Sorrow" (1978 / Turkey, Russia), the director, screenwriter and performer of the role of Ajdar in the film "The Restless Man" (1985 / Russia). He is the author of the books “What I Saw in Vietnam” (1964), “The Cinematic Art of Fighting Vietnam” (1968), “A Girl from the Thai Tribe” (1970), “The Sun is Crying” (1971).

He taught film directing and acting at the Moscow State Institute of Culture for more than 20 years. 

Honored Art Worker of Turkmenistan (1959), Honored Art Worker of Azerbaijan (1959), People's Artist (1967), People's Artist of the USSR (1991), State Prize laureate, Hero of Labor of Vietnam Ajdar Ibrahimov died in Moscow in 1993 and was buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku.

Director Azhdar Ibrahimov is the husband of screenwriter Margarita Maleyeva.
