Mukhtar Avsharov was born in Irevan. In 1918, he fled to Turkey with his family members who had survived the Armenian genocide. After some time, they moved to Ganja. After graduating from the 9th grade, he came to Baku and studied at an art school.
He appeared on stage as an actor in the drama club of Agaselim Manafli, which operated at the Railwaymen's House of Culture. He played the role of Sumbat in the play "Namus" (A. Shirvanzadeh). In 1933, he graduated from art school and returned to Ganja, where he worked as an assistant machinist at the Ganja locomotive depot and continued his activities as an actor at the Railwaymen's Young Spectator Theater. In 1936, he was sent to Moscow for a two-month cultural and educational course, and after graduating there, he was appointed to the position of a mass worker at the Ganja House of Culture. After some time, he was invited to the Ganja State Drama Theater, where he played more than 100 roles. He was arrested three days after the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. The reason given was his protest against the renaming of Ganja to Kirovabad in public places and the naming of the Ganja Theater after Beria. He spent five years in prison and was released five years ahead of schedule. Upon his return, he played the main role in the play “Love and Revenge” (S.S. Akhundov) at the Ganja Theater. The day after the play, he was released from the theater again. After being unemployed for a while, he worked as a laborer in a mill, and finally, after Stalin’s death, he resumed his activities at the Ganja Theater. In 1968, he was invited to the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theater and worked there until the end of 1990. In 1992, Amaliya Panahova founded the Baku Municipal Theater and invited him to her theater. In 1996, he was invited to the “Unfading Stars” Theater, which began operating under the Cultural Foundation.
He starred in the role of Karim in the film “Dmitry Kantemir” (1973, directors Vladimir Iovicha, Vitaly Kalashnikov / Moldova) by foreign filmmakers, as well as in the films “Bashi ach” (Georgia), “On the other side of the river” (Georgia), “Georgi Sakhakadze” (Georgia).
Honored Artist (1960), People's Artist (2002), laureate of the Order of “Glory” (2004) Mukhtar Avsharov died in 2004.
