Muslum Magomayev was born in Grozny. Originally from the village of Ilisu in the Gakh region.
He studied in Grozny and then at the Gori Teachers' Seminary in Tbilisi. At the seminary, he learned to play the violin and oboe, and sometimes replaced the conductor in the school orchestra.
After teaching in the North Caucasus, in Lankaran, he came to Baku on the advice of Uzeyir bey. He became the head of the theater troupe created by his friend. His first large-scale musical work was the opera "Shah Ismail" written in 1916. His creative heritage includes the opera "Nargiz", symphonic works such as "In the Azerbaijani Steppes", "Dance of the Liberated Azerbaijani Woman", "Dervish", "Shalala", radio marches, the play airs "Gazyrani", "Turaci", "Chechen Dance", the songs "Bahar", "Bizim kend", "Mazut ordus".
He composed music for the plays "The Dead" by Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and "In 1905" by Jafar Jabbarli.
Together with Uzeyir Hajibeyli, he compiled the collection "Azerbaijani Turkish Folk Songs" and wrote down more than 300 Azerbaijani folk songs and dance tunes.
In the 1920s and 1930s, he worked at the Commissariat of Education.
He was the music director of Baku Radio. On his initiative, a mugham concert called "Chahargah Night" was organized on the radio. At that time, Azerbaijan Radio opened its broadcast with Muslim Magomayev's radio march.
He worked as the director, artistic director and chief conductor of the Opera Theater.
Honored Artist (1936) Muslim Magomayev died in Nalchik in 1937 and was buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku.
Composer Muslum Magomayev (II) is the father of artist, painter Mahammad Magomayev.
