Vagif Mustafazadeh was born in Baku.

He studied at the Asaf Zeynalli Music School (1963).

In 1965, he created and led the “Orero” ensemble in Georgia. He created the “Qafqaz” jazz trio at the Georgian State Philharmonic (1965).

He was a soloist-pianist of the Azerbaijan State Variety Orchestra.

He led the first female vocal quartet “Leyli” (1970), the “Sevil” (1971-1977) and “Mugham” instrumental ensembles (1977-1979).

He creatively worked on Azerbaijani mughams and folk tunes, created a synthesis of mugham and jazz.

He was a laureate of the “Tallinn-66”, “Tbilisi-78” all-Union jazz festivals, and was awarded the 1st prize at the 8th International Jazz Competition of Composers held in Monte Carlo.

He is the author of a concerto for piano and symphony orchestra, as well as other original works.

Honored Artist (1979) Vagif Mustafazadeh died on stage at the age of 39 on December 16, 1979 in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and was buried in the Yasamal cemetery.

He was posthumously awarded the State Prize (1982).
