Adil Isgandarov (Edil Isgandarov) was born in Ganja. He participated in drama clubs from an early age. He studied at the Theater Technical School (1931) and the Moscow State Institute of Theater Arts named after A.Lunacharsky. While studying in Moscow, he worked at the Vakhtangov Theater. In 1936, he returned to Baku and was appointed chief director and soon artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theater. One after another, he staged plays such as “Vagif”, “Hayat”, “Farhad and Shirin”, “Khans”, “Od Gelini”. “Othello” he staged became known throughout the world. He attended film directing courses in Moscow. After returning to Baku, he was appointed artistic director at the film studio and was its director (1966-1974). His greatest dream was to make a film version of the work “Vagif”. At the 5th All-Union Film Festival held in Tbilisi in 1972, the jury proposed that the “Best Actor” award be given to 2 actors: for Abbasgulu agha role - Hasan Mammadov and Karbalayi role - Adil Isgandarov. He refused the award: “Gemlo was created very beautifully. The award should be given to Melik Dadashov”. However, the jury did not change its mind. He starred in the Russian-made films “Blood of the Soil” (1931, director Mikhail Averbakh) and the Turkish-Russian joint production “My Love, My Sorrow” (1978, director Ajdar Ibrahimov). Honored Art Worker (1938), People's Artist (1943), the first People's Artist of the USSR of Transcaucasia (1959), laureate of the USSR State Prize (1948), Adil Isgandarov died in 1978 and was buried in the 2nd Alley of Honor.
