Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in Lyon, France.
He studied at the Saint-Barthélemy Christian Brothers School and the Sainte-Croix College in Lyon, and also took a course for reserve officers.
He worked as a pilot for Aéropostale, a company that delivered mail to the coast of North Africa. He was appointed station manager at Cap Juby, located on the edge of the Sahara; it was there that he wrote his first work, the novel *Southern Mail*. In 1929, he returned to France and enrolled in naval aviation courses in Brest. He was appointed technical director of Aéroposta-Argentina, a subsidiary of Aéropostale. He was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honour for his contributions to the development of civil aviation.
The French writer, journalist, and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry died in a plane crash in 1944.
