Shamil Mahmudbayov was born in Nakhchivan.

He was admitted to the Railway Technical School. The year he graduated from school, the war began. He enlisted in the ranks of volunteers and graduated from a military-technical school in Grozny. He fought as part of a unit fighting on the First Ukrainian Front. After being discharged from the army, he studied at the Directing Department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1954, course of S. Gerasimov and T. Makarova).

Since 1954, he has worked at the "Azerbaijanfilm" film studio. He directed many documentary and feature films, and played roles as an actor.

He was awarded the State Prize for the film "Shared Bread".

Honored Artist (1976), State Prize laureate (1970) Shamil Mahmudbayov died in 1997.
