Zulfugar Hajibayov was born in Shusha. He is the elder brother of Uzeyir and Jeyhun Hajibayov.

He is the author of the first Azerbaijani operetta "50 years old young man" (1910). His name went down in our cultural history as an opera author with "Ashig Garib" (1915). He wrote the musical comedies "Elli yashinda javan" (1909), "Varli" (1911), "Mashadi Khudu", "Evliykan subay" (1911) based on his own librettos. His songs "Kend gizi", "Asgar nagmasi" and others were the language of the time. "Azerbaijani woman's dance" written for piano and symphony orchestra, "Cantata" worked on together with composer Zakir Baghirov, were sung as a standard of public taste for many years.

Honored Artist (1943) Zulfugar Hajibayov died in 1950 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
