Onegin Hajigasimov was born in Baku.

He studied at the M. Gorky Literary Institute.

Thanks to the lyrics he wrote, he became one of the most popular singer-poets in the USSR in the 1960s-1980s. He is also famous for writing texts for a number of foreign songs in Russian. He converted to Orthodoxy in 1985 and in 1988 took the name hieroschimonk Simon at the Optina Hermitage monastery in the Moscow region.

Onegin Hajigasimov died of cancer in 2002. He was buried in the cemetery of the village of Lyamtsino, Domodedovo district, Moscow region.
