Bekir Nabiyev was born in the village of Uchgovag, Aghdash.
He studied at the Philology Faculty of Azerbaijan State University (1949-1954).

He served as a member of the Council for Coordination of Research on the Humanities under the USSR Academy of Sciences, a member of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Editor-in-Chief of the “News” magazine (Literature, Language and Art series), Chairman of the Specialized Defense Council on Literature (since 1993), a member of the editorial board of the “Literature and Art” newspaper, the methodological council of the State Publishing House, the Artistic Council of the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio, the Union of Azerbaijani Writers, the Board of Directors of the “Vatan” society, the plenum of the Republican “Bilik” society, and an advisor to the General Editorial Board of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia.
His first critical notes were published in the newspaper “For the Education of Lenin”. He began his literary activity with the review “Dama-dama göl olar” published in the “Literary Newspaper” (1951). He defended his candidate dissertation on the topic “Firudin bey Kocharlin’s life and creativity” at the postgraduate course of the AUL (1960). He is one of the authors and editors of “History of Multinational Soviet Literature”, the two-volume “History of Azerbaijani Soviet Literature”, and the editor-in-chief of the multi-volume “History of Azerbaijani Literature”. He was the responsible coordinator for the republic of the 30-volume “Literature of the Turkic World” encyclopedia.
He is the first Azerbaijani critic to receive the “Golden Pen” award (1974). For his research, he was awarded the State Prizes of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1978, 2010), the Order of "Friendship of Peoples" (1986), "Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev" (1993), "Mammad Araz" (1994), the "Master" (1997) of the Presidium of the Union of Journalists of Azerbaijan, the International TIKA (2002) awards, the "Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev" medal (2005), the "Shohrat" (2000) and "Istiglal" (2005) orders.
Doctor of Philological Sciences (1970), Professor (1982), Honored Scientist (1990), Academician Bekir Nabiyev died in 2012 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
