Boris Pumpyanski was born in Baku.
He studied at the Art School (1927) and the cameraman department of the Odessa Cinema Technical School (1927-1931).
He was a cameraman and artistic director of the chronicle department of the Azerkino-Azerfilm film studio (1931-1935), a cameraman of the Alma-Ata documentary-chronicle studio (1938-1943). He filmed at the front.
He died in 1944 while filming around the Carpathians. He was buried in Moscow.
