Gamar Salamzadeh (Gamar Najafova) was born in Julfa.

In 1912, her family moved to the city of Tbilisi. Her father, poet, educator, and theater figure Aligulu Gamkusar, was murdered by the Mensheviks in 1919. She remained under the care of her uncle Rzagulu Najafov. She studied at a girls' school in Nakhchivan, at the Pedagogical Institute in Baku, and at the State Cinematography Technical School in Moscow. After graduating from the second year, she was called to a film studio in Baku. The cover of the magazine "Rabochiy zritel" (1930, N35), which was once published in Baku, featured her photo and the following words: "The first female assistant film director working at "Azerkino" - a Turkish woman Gamar Najafova." She is the author of the book "The World Seen Through a Small Window."

Gamar Salamzadeh, the first female film director of Azerbaijan, died in 1994.
