Gulagha Mammadov was born in the Kichik Bazar neighborhood of Lankaran and grew up in Baku.

He was interested in music since childhood, and would gather the neighboring children and sing songs. When he was 12 years old, the composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov, who was passing through the neighborhood, heard a charming child's voice and stopped. He was looking for a talented child of this age to perform Koroglu's aria for the Decade of Azerbaijani Culture and Art to be held in Moscow. He invited him to a competition to be held at the Opera Theater. In 1938, Koroglu's aria "I Saw You, I Fell in Love" performed on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow with the accompaniment of Maestro Niyazi was met with applause. At the age of 15, he was accepted into Said Rustamov's ensemble. Then he studied at the Conservatory. From the age of 20, he worked at the Musical Comedy Theater for several years. He sang more than 600 folk and composer songs. He performed characteristic musical numbers in more than 15 feature films and theater performances. He performed with most folk instrument ensembles and symphony orchestras operating in the republic. He worked in the song and dance ensemble of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic, the State Musical Comedy Theater. From 1952 until the end of his life, he was a soloist of the folk instrument ensemble of the Azerbaijan State Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee.
