Ilyas Tapdig (Ilyas Tapdigov) was born in the village of Ali Ismayilli in Gadabay.
He studied at the Faculty of Language and Literature of the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute (1952-1956).
He worked as an editor at "Ushakganjneshr" (1957-1962), editor, senior editor at "Azerneshr" (1962-1968), senior editor, editorial director, editor-in-chief at "Ganjlik" publishing house (1968-1976), group leader at the Azerbaijan General Press Authority (1976-1978), editor-in-chief of the television youth editorial office at the Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee (1978-1983), head of the fiction department at "Azerneshr" (1989-1992), teacher at the Turkish Standards Institute and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Agency in Ankara, Turkey, special correspondent for Turkey of the "Azerbaijan" newspaper (1992-1995), and head of the fiction department at "Azerneshr" (1989-2016).
He began his literary career as a student with the poem "Baku's Night" published in the "Azerbaijan" magazine. "The Shepherd of Our Village" (1955), "At the Fountain" (1958), "Eyes" (1959), "The Capricious Sun" (1987), "The Paths of Love" (1990) are some of his published books.
Ilyas Tapdig died in 2016 and was buried in the Badamdar cemetery.
