Ismayil Akhundov was born in the Mashtaga settlement of Baku.

He studied at the Baku Art School (1928) and the Publishing Department of the Moscow Polygraphy Institute (1928-1932).

In 1932, he was sent to Baku on assignment and worked as an artist at “Azernashr”. He began his creative work mainly with book illustrations. He was engaged in the genres of graphics, caricatures and posters. He worked for a long time in the satirical magazine “Kirpi”. He began his activity as a theater artist by drawing sketches of costumes for the play “Hayat” (Mirza Ibrahimov) staged by Adil Isgandarov at the Academic National Drama Theater (1937). He brought certain innovations to the art of theater decoration. He worked on colorful designs for operettas at the Azerbaijan State Musical Comedy Theater. His creativity is characterized by the cheerfulness and clarity of colors, the simplicity of composition, and the fact that the design work creates poetic harmony with the idea of ​​the playwright and director.

Honored Artist (1940), People's Artist (1960), Stalin Prize laureate (1950) Ismail Akhundov died in 1969 in Krakow, Poland.
