Ismayil Mammadov was born in Baku.
He studied at the Painting Department of the Azim Azimzade Art School (1963-1968), at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture named after Ilya Repin (1968-1974, Yefsey Mousenko's class).
He began to engage in book graphics during his student years. He worked as an artist at the Production Creative Combine of the Art Fund of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan (1974), an artist at the Museum of Art Design (1981), a chief artist at the “Az-Art” small production enterprise (1995), a production artist at the Academic National Drama Theater (1996-1998), and a chief artist at the Azerbaijan State Musical Comedy Theater (1998-2007). He provided artistic design for performances at the Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theater. He was engaged in pedagogical activities.
Ismayil Mammadov, Honored Artist (2002), laureate of the "Golden Dervish" and "Humay" awards, died in 2016.
