Mammadrza Sheykhzamanov was born in Ganja.

He lost his father when he was 2 years old. After the collapse of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the "purges" carried out among the supporters of independence also affected the Sheykhzamanov generation. His grandfather Nagi Sheykhzamanov and his close relatives were subjected to repression. In high school, he gradually entered the theater studio. In 1934, he was invited to the Ganja State Drama Theater. He first performed in the small role of Brahma in the play "Indian Girl" (A. Hamid). In 1941, he was accused of pan-Turkism and exiled to the Semipalatinsk region of Kazakhstan. During his years in exile, he worked as a teacher at a high school and created a drama club.

After being acquitted, he returned to Ganja with his family. Later, he started working at the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theater.

People's Artist (1974), State Prize laureate (1984) Mammadrza Sheykhzamanov died in 1984 and was buried in the Yasamal cemetery.
