Mayis Aghabayov was born in Baku.
He studied at the Azerbaijan State Art School named after Azim Azimzade (1961), and the Art Faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1969).
He worked as a production artist at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio. Since 1965, he has participated in international and local exhibitions with his film and painting works. Since 1996, he has been teaching at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art, was a professor of the Department of Academic Painting at the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts, and headed the department in 2006-2010.
He was awarded the “Humay” national prize (2012).
Honored Artist (1993), People's Artist (2000) Mayis Aghabayov died in 2020.
