Mehdi Huseyn (Mehdi Huseynov) was born in the village of Ikin Shikhli, Gazakh.

He studied at the History Department of the Pedagogical Faculty of Azerbaijan State University (1926-1931), and at the academy-type film scriptwriters course at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1938).

He worked as the executive secretary of the Azerbaijan Proletarian Writers' Society, executive secretary of the Organizing Committee of the Azerbaijan Writers' Union (1930-1934), head of the script department of the film studio (1939), director of the Baku film studio (1944), secretary of the Board of Directors of the Azerbaijan Writers' Union (1954-1958), first secretary (1958-1965), and chairman (1958-1965).

He began his creative career with correspondent writing. His first critical article "The Futurism Trend in Us" was published in 1926, and his first story "Sheep Shearing" in 1927. The first historical narrative in Azerbaijani literature, “Commissar” (1949), “Sahar” (1953), “Tarlan” (1940), “Flowers of the Motherland” (1942), “Moscow” (1942), “Urek” (1945), “Faryad” (1945), glorifies the courage and heroism of people. The novels “Absheron” (1949), “Qara daşlar” (1957-1959) and “Yeralti chaylar deniz akhir” (1965) are noteworthy for their courageous intervention in social, moral and ethical problems. He began his dramatic work with the play “Shohrat” (1939). The historical dramas “Nizami” (1942) and “Cavanshir” (1957) reflect the patriotism and heroic traditions of the people. He has the plays "Alov" (1961), "Intizar" (1944, together with Ilyas Efendiyev), "Shamil" (1940-1941) and "Kardashlar" (1948), as well as memoirs, travel notes ("A Month and a Day", 1963), and diaries.

People's Writer (1964), laureate of the USSR State Prize (1950), Mehdi Huseyn died in 1965 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
