Mehdi Mammadov was born in Shusha.
He studied at the Baku Theater School (1935), the Moscow Institute of Theater Arts named after A. Lunacharsky (1968, N. Garchakov's class).
From the seventh grade he appeared on public stages in the performances of the Baku Turkish Workers' Theater. He worked as a chief director at the Ganja State Drama Theater (1942-1946), the National Drama Theater (1960-1963), and the Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theater (1977-1982). He was the chairman of the Azerbaijan Theater Society (1971-1976). From 1946 until the end of his life, he taught acting and directing at the Azerbaijan State Theater Institute and was the head of the department. He defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Aesthetic Problems of Azeri Dramaturgy" (1968). He is the author of about 10 books.
State Prize laureate (1984), Honored Artist (1949), People's Artist (1958), People's Artist of the USSR (1974), Doctor of Art History, Professor Mehdi Mammadov died in 1985 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
