Novruz Akhundov was born in Nakhchivan. In 1918, his family, originally from Western Azerbaijan, was expelled from the Deralayaz district. In 1937, his grandfather and uncle were subjected to repression and exiled from Azerbaijan. When he was a baby, his family moved to Kurdakhani, and then to Pirshaghi.

He studied at the Faculty of Cinema and Dramatic Acting of the Azerbaijan State Theater Institute (1962-1967), and at directing courses in Moscow.

He starred in the Uzbek-made film “Coup d’Etat 107” (1982, directors Zahid Sabitov, Georgi Bzarov), and in many “Mozalan” plots.

Since 1967, he worked as an assistant in the dubbing department of the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio, and then as a director. He directed the dubbing of about 500 films into Azerbaijani.
