Oruj Gurbanov (Oruj Izzetoghlu) was born in Baku.

He studied at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts, majoring in Drama and Film Acting, and in Moscow under the direction of director A. Efros at the Higher Theater Directing Course (1979-1980).

He interned at the Lensovet Theater in St. Petersburg and the Malaya Bromnaya Theater in Moscow. Since 1975, he has worked as a chief director at the Lankaran State Theater and a director at the Sumgayit State Theater. He was the chief director of the Lankaran State Drama Theater (2017–2022). He has directed several performances at the Academic National Drama Theater, the Yerevan State Theater, and the Musical Comedy Theater. He was awarded the Golden Dervish Award for the play “The Resurrected Man” (Mir Jalal) (2006). He was the scriptwriter and director of several state events. He has produced radio plays. He is the author of twelve volumes of novels, short stories, and dozens of dramas on historical and contemporary themes.
