Roman Karmen was born in Odessa.
He studied at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography as a cameraman (1932).
During the National Revolutionary War in Spain (1936-1939), he shot documentary newsreels with cameraman B. Makaseyev. During the Great Patriotic War, he headed front-line film crews.
Honored Artist of Azerbaijan (1959), laureate of the USSR State Prizes (1942, 1947, 1952, 1975), People's Artist of the USSR (1966), Hero of Socialist Labor (1976) Roman Karmen died in Moscow in 1978.
