Rufat Shabanov was born in Baku.
He studied at the Drama and Film Directing Department of the Azerbaijan State Theater Institute (1945-1952).
He began his career at the Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theater (1942), then worked at the Baku Film Studio (1944). He worked as a troupe director and director at the Russian Drama Theater (1951-1957), a director at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio (1957-1967), and the chief director of the film shooting editorial office on Azerbaijani television (1967-1981). He was one of the organizers and chief director of the “Ekran” and “Azerbaijantelefilm” Creative Unions.
Honored Artist (1992) Rufat Shabanov died in 1998.
Director Rufat Shabanov was the husband of actress Elmira Shabanova.
Director Rufat Shabanov is the father of director Fuad Shabanov and Leyla Vazirzadeh.
