Shafiga Akhundova was born in Sheki.
She studied at the Baku Music School named after Asaf Zeynalli (1943-1944), and at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, specializing in composition (1956, B. Zeydman's class). At the music school, she studied with Uzeyir Hajibeyov.
In 1972, she became the first female composer in the East to write an opera by writing the opera "The Bride's Rock". She is the author of various songs, the operetta "Our House, Our Secret" (1965), plays for string quartet, plays for theater, and children's plays.
Honored Artist (1973), People's Artist (1998), laureate of the "Shohrat" Order (2005) Shafiga Akhundova died in 2013 and was buried in the II Alley of Honor.
