Suleyman Sani Akhundov was born in Shusha.
He studied at the Shusha Real School and the Transcaucasian Teachers' Seminary.
He worked as a teacher at a Russian-Tatar school of the 3rd degree, head of the education department of the Karabakh region (1920–1921), and headmaster of a school in Baku (1922–1930). He was engaged in pedagogical activity until the end of his life, and was known as a writer and journalist. In 1906, he participated in the 1st Congress of Azerbaijani teachers convened in Baku.
In 1922, he was elected the first chairman of the Union of Writers and Poets of Azerbaijan. He wrote his first large-scale work, the comedy "Tamahkar", under the influence of Mirza Fatali Akhundov's work "Haji Gara" (1899). In the stories "Dream", "Hospitality", and "Kovkabihurriyyat", the writer touched upon current socio-political issues. His stories, known as "Terrible Tales", described the lives of children. He wrote plays on the theme of women's liberation: "Shahsanem and Gulpari", "Two Ways", and "The Consequence of One Love". He is the author of a textbook called "Second Year".
In order to distinguish himself from his literary namesake Mirza Fatali Akhundov, he adopted the nickname "sani", which means "second" in Arabic.
Suleyman Sani Akhundov died in 1939 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
