Tofig Bakikhanov was born in Baku.
He studied violin (M. Simberov's class) at the ten-year music school under the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (now the Baku Academy of Music) (now the Bulbul Secondary Specialized Music School), violin (1953, Alexander Amito's course) and composition (1957, Gara Garayev's course) at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory.
During his student years, he was engaged in performing activities and worked as a soloist in the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra, as well as the symphony orchestra of the Azerbaijan Radio. His creative work is dominated by chamber-instrumental and symphonic genre works. He is the author of 25 concerts, 20 sonatas, 5 symphonic mughams, 8 symphonies, 6 symphonic poems, 26 sonatas in the field of chamber music, works for ensembles of various compositions, more than 100 songs and romances.
He was engaged in pedagogical activities at the Baku Academy of Music for a long time.
He was awarded the orders "Shohrat" (2000), "Sharaf" (2021), "Labor" of the 1st degree (2025).
Honored Art Worker (1973), People's Artist (1991), Professor (1983) Tofig Bakikhanov died in 2026 and was buried in the II Alley of Honor.
