Vagif Samadoghlu (Vagif Vakilov) was born in Baku.

He studied at the Bulbul Music School (1956), the Piano Department of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1956-1961). He completed a specialized course at the Moscow State Conservatory (1962-1963).

He taught at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1963-1971).

In addition to his teaching activities, he was the head of the art editorial office of the Azerbaijan Encyclopedia (1968-1971), an editor at the “Yazichi” publishing house (1978-1982), a screenwriter at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio, head of the literary section of the film-actor theater (1982-1985), and editor-in-chief of the “Oguz eli” newspaper (1992-1994). His first printed work, “Seven Poems,” was published in the “Azerbaijan” magazine in 1963. His first book of poems, "Telegram from the Road," was published in 1968. He was considered one of the most famous jazz experts in Azerbaijan. He hosted the "Jazz Enthusiasts Club" on television. He is the author of many song texts. In addition to poems, he has written about 20 plays. Some of these plays have been performed in various theaters.

In 2000, he was elected a deputy to the Milli Majlis.

Honored Artist (1989), People's Poet (1999), "Humay" (1998) and "Nasimi" awards (2014), laureate of the "Sharaf" and "Istiglal" orders, Vagif Samadoghlu died in 2015 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
